Your Island Is the Focal Point — Treat It That Way
The kitchen island is the most-used and most-seen surface in most NH homes. It's where meals are prepped, where guests gather, where kids do homework. Getting the stone, the overhang, and the edge profile right matters more here than anywhere else in your kitchen.
At Precision Granite Works, we've fabricated hundreds of kitchen islands across New Hampshire — from simple rectangular tops with seating overhangs to full waterfall designs and complex two-tone kitchens. We cut every piece in our Epsom shop and bring it to your home ready to install.

Design Guide
Island Design Options We Specialize In
From seating overhangs to waterfall edges, here's what we fabricate every day for NH kitchens.
Seating Overhang Guide
Standard counter-height seating (bar stool, 28–30" seat height) needs a 12" overhang minimum. Bar-height islands (42" tall) need 15–18" for comfortable knee clearance. We spec every overhang to your stool height and island dimensions during templating.
Waterfall Edges
A waterfall island continues the stone slab vertically down one or both ends to the floor, creating a seamless stone panel. The effect is dramatic and modern. We match the book-matched vein pattern across the top and sides for a continuous, architectural look.
Two-Tone Design
Using one material on the island and a different material on the perimeter countertops is a popular design trend in NH kitchens. Classic pairings: white quartz perimeter + dark granite island, marble island + quartz perimeter. We fabricate both surfaces in our shop.
Custom Shapes & Sizes
Islands don't have to be rectangular. We fabricate curved corners, L-shapes, notched islands, and any custom footprint. Our digital Flexijet templating captures every angle and dimension exactly — no guesswork on fit.
Choose Your Material
Which Stone Is Right for Your Island?
Islands take more abuse than any other surface — and they're seen from every angle. Here's how each material performs in an island application.
Most popularGranite Islands
Naturally heat-resistant — hot pans directly from the stove or oven land on granite with zero damage. Every slab is unique, and dramatic movement in the stone makes a granite island a true statement piece.
Zero maintenanceQuartz Islands
Non-porous and never needs sealing — the top choice for families who use their island constantly. Consistent color and pattern makes matching seams across a large island significantly easier.
Ultimate luxuryMarble Islands
Nothing rivals the drama of a full marble island — especially in large formats. Calacatta and Statuario marble create statement islands that anchor an entire kitchen's design. Best for lower-use or display-focused islands.
Best of both worldsQuartzite Islands
Marble-like veining and drama with significantly better hardness and heat tolerance. Super White and Taj Mahal quartzite are increasingly popular for large island applications in NH kitchens.
Unique & non-porousSoapstone Islands
A bold, historic choice that develops a rich dark patina over time. Naturally heat-resistant and non-porous. Soapstone islands make a striking visual statement in transitional and farmhouse kitchens.
Budget-friendlyRemnant Islands
Many kitchen islands fall within the size range where a premium remnant slab covers the full top — at significantly reduced cost. Same quality stone, same fabrication, fraction of the price.

Common Questions
Kitchen Island Countertop FAQ
How much overhang do I need for seating at a kitchen island?
For standard counter-height seating (29–30" stool seat), plan for a minimum 12" overhang. For comfort with legs and knee clearance, 15" is ideal. Bar-height islands (42" tall) typically need 15–18" of overhang. We'll confirm the exact spec based on your stool height and island dimensions during your templating visit — getting the overhang right is one of the most important details in island fabrication.
What is a waterfall island countertop and how is it fabricated?
A waterfall countertop continues the stone slab down one or both vertical ends of the island, all the way to the floor — creating a continuous stone panel. To fabricate it, we cut the top slab and the end panels from the same slab and book-match the veining so the pattern flows seamlessly around the corner. The result looks like one continuous piece of stone. It works beautifully with granite, marble, and quartzite and is one of the most requested island upgrades we do.
Can I use a different countertop material on my island than on my perimeter?
Absolutely — two-tone kitchens are extremely popular in NH right now and we fabricate both surfaces in our shop. Common pairings include a dark granite island with white quartz perimeter, or a marble island with quartz perimeter countertops. We'll help you select materials that complement each other and discuss the practical considerations (maintenance, heat resistance) for each surface based on how you use each area of your kitchen.
What countertop material is best for a kitchen island?
It depends on how you use your island. If it's your primary prep and cooking surface, granite is hard to beat — it's fully heat resistant, scratch resistant, and never cracks under a hot pan. If you entertain heavily and want zero maintenance, quartz is ideal. If you want maximum visual impact — especially for a waterfall design — marble or quartzite delivers something granite and quartz can't match aesthetically. We'll walk you through the best fit for your specific kitchen during a free consultation.
How thick should a kitchen island countertop be?
Most NH kitchen island countertops are fabricated in 3cm (1¼") thickness — it's the industry standard for kitchen surfaces, provides excellent strength for unsupported overhangs, and has a substantial, premium look on the edge. For very long overhangs (over 14") without corbel support, we may recommend additional support depending on the material. We'll advise on support requirements during templating based on your exact dimensions.
Do you fabricate seating overhangs without corbels or brackets?
Yes — granite, quartz, and quartzite are all strong enough to support a standard 12" seating overhang without corbels or brackets, which gives a much cleaner look. For overhangs beyond 12–14", material type, thickness, and cabinet support all factor in. We assess every island during templating and will tell you exactly what your chosen stone can support safely, and whether any hidden support makes sense for your design.
