Why Templating Matters

The Difference Between a Perfect Fit and a Costly Mistake

No two kitchens or bathrooms in New Hampshire are built exactly alike. Walls aren't perfectly straight. Corners aren't perfectly square. Appliances, sinks, and plumbing all have to be precisely accounted for. Without an accurate template, even the most beautifully fabricated countertop can arrive and fail to fit.

That's why templating is the most important step in the countertop process — and why we invest in the best technology to get it right. Our digital templating system captures your space down to a fraction of an inch, creating a digital blueprint that drives every cut and edge detail in our fabrication shop.

The result: countertops that drop in perfectly on installation day, with no gaps, no rework, and no surprises.

Before your template appointment, most homeowners find it helpful to visit our Epsom, NH showroom first. You can view full slabs, compare samples side by side, review edge profiles, and talk through sink, faucet, and cooktop details and backsplash options with our team — so by the time we template, your decisions are already made and the visit goes even faster.

Technology That Protects You

Digital Templating vs. Traditional Methods

Not all templating is created equal. Here's why our digital approach produces better outcomes for every project.

Digital Laser Templating
  • Measurements accurate to ±1/32"
  • Digital file transfers directly to CNC fabrication equipment
  • Automatically accounts for wall irregularities
  • No physical template to transport or damage
  • Repeatable and verifiable — every measurement is recorded
  • Supports complex layouts, islands, and curved edges
  • Reduces human error at every stage
Traditional Hand / Cardboard Templates
  • Manual measurements prone to human error
  • Cardboard can shift, bend, or be damaged in transit
  • Difficult to account for out-of-square walls
  • More back-and-forth between site and shop
  • Higher risk of fit issues on install day
  • Less detail captured for complex layouts
  • Results depend heavily on individual skill

The Technology We Use

Flexijet 3D Digital Templating System

We use the Flexijet 3D — one of the most advanced digital templating systems available to stone fabricators. It works by projecting a laser point at your surfaces and recording precise coordinates in real time, building a complete digital map of your space from the ground up.

Once your template is complete and you've approved it, the digital file is sent straight to our Manchester, NH fabrication shop. No re-entering measurements. No interpretation errors. The cut your countertops receive is driven entirely by the exact dimensions captured in your home, and once fabrication is complete, our crew handles installation.

Accuracy to within ±1/32" — no tape measure can compete
Captures out-of-square walls and irregular angles automatically
Digital file transfers directly to CNC cutting — zero transcription
Used by leading fabricators throughout the US and Europe

Plan Ahead

Decisions to Make Before Templating

Your cabinets need to be fully installed and level before we can template — that's the surface every measurement is based on. Beyond that, a handful of decisions are much easier to make before we arrive than during the appointment:

Sink type — undermount vs. drop-in
Faucet hole placement and count
Soap dispenser or air switch holes
Cooktop model and cutout requirements
Overhang length on islands and eating bars
Backsplash height, including full-height backsplash
Appliance panels or slide-in range clearances
Cabinet installation and levelness

What NH Homeowners Say

The Proof Is in the Fit

"The template appointment was the smoothest part of the whole remodel. The technician was at our house for about 90 minutes, walked us through every seam and overhang decision, and three days later they were cutting stone. On installation day everything fit perfectly — not a single gap."

Kevin & Sarah M.
Concord, NH

"We had an unusual kitchen with a lot of odd angles from an addition. I was nervous about fit. The digital templating system handled every quirk — the countertops came in and dropped right into place. It was honestly impressive."

Patricia W.
Gilford, NH

"I've had countertops installed before by a different company and the fit issues were a nightmare. With Precision Granite Works, the template appointment was thorough and professional and the final install was flawless. Night and day difference."

Common Questions

Countertop Templating FAQ

Everything New Hampshire homeowners ask us about the template process.

When in the remodel process should I schedule countertop templating?

Templating should happen after your cabinets are fully installed and level, and after any appliances that affect countertop layout are in place. Doing it too early — before cabinets are set — will result in inaccurate measurements. If you're replacing existing countertops in a kitchen that's staying the same, cabinets don't need to change and we can template right away.

How long does a countertop template appointment take?

Most residential template appointments take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the complexity of your layout. Large kitchens with islands, multiple sections, or custom shapes may take a bit longer. We'll give you an accurate time estimate when you call.

Do I need to be home for the template appointment?

Yes. We recommend that a decision-maker be present so we can confirm seam placement, overhangs, and any design details that affect fabrication. These decisions are much easier to make on-site than over the phone — and getting them right before fabrication begins saves time and ensures the final result matches your vision.

How soon after templating will my countertops be ready?

Once your template is complete and approved, fabrication typically begins within 1–3 business days. Most standard residential projects are ready for installation within 7–10 business days of templating. We'll give you a specific timeline at your appointment.

What if my walls are out of square or uneven?

That's exactly what digital templating is designed to handle. Our system captures every irregularity — out-of-square walls, uneven floors, cabinets that aren't perfectly plumb — so your countertops are scribed to fit your actual space, not a theoretical perfect room. This is one of the most important advantages of digital over traditional hand templating.

Is digital templating more accurate than traditional cardboard templates?

Significantly more accurate. Our digital laser templating system captures dimensions to within ±1/32" — far beyond what hand measurements or cardboard templates can achieve. The digital file transfers directly into our CNC fabrication equipment, eliminating the transcription errors that occur when measurements are manually re-entered. The result is a countertop that fits perfectly on installation day, every time.

Is templating included in the project cost?

Yes. Templating is part of our full-service countertop process — there's no separate line-item charge for your template appointment. When you get a quote from Precision Granite Works, it covers the complete project from template through installation.

What should I have ready before the template appointment?

Cabinets should be fully installed and level. Have your sink on-site so we can account for the cutout dimensions. Know your faucet hole requirements. Have your edge profile selection ready to discuss. Clear your countertop area so our technician has full access. And have your slab selection confirmed — this helps us plan seam placement and vein layout during the template visit.
