Why Natural Stone

The Material That No Surface Can Replicate

Natural stone countertops — granite, marble, quartzite, and soapstone — are formed over millions of years under geological conditions that create patterns, colors, and depth that no engineered product can authentically reproduce. Each slab is genuinely unique: the exact combination of mineral composition, veining, and character in your countertop exists nowhere else on earth.

At Precision Granite Works, we have worked exclusively with natural stone since 1990. We fabricate every countertop in-house at our Epsom, NH facility — template, cut, edge, finish, and install — with no outsourcing. Our team knows these materials at a level that comes only from decades of daily work with them. We help you understand each stone honestly before you choose, so the result is exactly what you expected.

No two slabs are identical

Every piece of natural stone was formed over millions of years under unique geological conditions. No factory process — no matter how advanced — can replicate the depth, variation, and authenticity of a natural slab. Your countertop will be the only one like it in the world.

Adds lasting value to your home

Natural stone countertops are consistently cited by real estate professionals as one of the highest-return kitchen upgrades available. Buyers recognize and value natural stone — it communicates quality and permanence in a way that engineered surfaces cannot.

Built to outlast the house

Natural stone countertops installed correctly will last the lifetime of your home and beyond. They don't yellow, crack, delaminate, or require replacement. The stone quarried for your countertop is the same material found in buildings that have stood for centuries.

A natural, honest material

Natural stone requires no resins, polymers, or binders. It comes from the earth, is cut and finished, and installed in your home — that's the full story. For homeowners who value authenticity and natural materials, stone is the only countertop that delivers it completely.

Granite Countertops

Most popular

The NH standard — durable, bold, and genuinely unique

Granite is the most widely chosen natural stone countertop in New Hampshire — and for good reason. As a true igneous rock, it's one of the hardest and most durable surfaces you can put in a kitchen. It does not etch when exposed to acids, it handles heat exceptionally well, and every slab carries a completely unique pattern that no other countertop material can replicate. From dramatic dark backgrounds to luminous whites with gold movement, granite covers more visual territory than any other stone.

Marble Countertops

Timeless elegance

The elegance benchmark — timeless, luminous, and honest

Marble is the stone that defines luxury in stone surfaces — its translucent luminosity, sweeping veining, and cool surface temperature are simply unmatched. It does require more thoughtful ownership than granite: it etches when exposed to acids and needs more frequent sealing. But for the right household, marble's aging character — the patina it develops with use — is part of the appeal. We are honest with every marble customer about what to expect, so you make the decision with full information.

Quartzite countertops in a New Hampshire kitchen — Precision Granite Works

Quartzite Countertops

Best of both worlds

The misunderstood superstar — marble look with granite durability

Quartzite is natural sandstone that has been transformed under heat and pressure into one of the hardest stones on earth — harder than granite in most cases. Its appearance ranges from clean whites with subtle movement to dramatic veined slabs that rival the finest Italian marble, but with substantially better durability and etch resistance. It's the stone we most often recommend to customers who want the marble look but are concerned about daily kitchen use.

Soapstone Countertops

Unique character

The American classic — dense, matte, and distinctly charming

Soapstone is a uniquely New England material — it was used in Vermont and New Hampshire farmhouse sinks and counters for centuries. It's dense, completely non-porous, and chemically inert, which means it never etches, never stains, and never requires sealing. Its soft, matte appearance and cool touch are unlike anything else in the stone world. The one consideration: it can show scratches over time, which buff out easily or become part of the stone's living patina — treated with mineral oil or beeswax to deepen the natural darkening.

Type
Metamorphic rock (talc-rich)
Etch risk
None — chemically inert

No sealing required
Hardness
Soft (Mohs 1–2) but dense and non-porous
Completely non-porous — no sealing ever required
Chemically inert — immune to acids, stains, and heat

Historically used in New England farmhouse kitchens for centuries
Cool, smooth surface — comfortable for baking and food prep

Common Questions

Natural Stone Countertop FAQ

Honest answers to what NH homeowners ask most about natural stone.

What is the best natural stone for kitchen countertops?

For most NH kitchens, granite is the best all-around natural stone choice — it's extremely hard, doesn't etch from kitchen acids, handles heat well, requires only annual sealing, and comes in hundreds of colors and patterns. Quartzite is an excellent alternative for those who want a marble-like aesthetic with comparable durability. Marble is the right choice for households that are willing to be thoughtful about acid exposure and appreciate the patina it develops over time. Soapstone is ideal for farmhouse kitchens and households that want zero maintenance and zero sealing.

How does natural stone compare to quartz countertops?

Natural stone and engineered quartz are both excellent countertop materials — the right choice depends on your priorities. Natural stone offers unmatched authenticity, uniqueness, and visual depth; each slab is one-of-a-kind. Granite and quartzite are as durable as quartz for kitchen use. Quartz offers slightly more consistency (engineered to specific specs) and somewhat better stain resistance without sealing. Natural stone requires periodic sealing; quartz does not. For resale value and authenticity, natural stone is typically preferred. We carry both and are happy to help you compare.

Does natural stone need to be sealed?

Most natural stone countertops benefit from periodic sealing — granite and quartzite typically need sealing once a year, marble every 6–12 months depending on use. Soapstone is the exception: it's completely non-porous and never requires sealing. Sealing is a straightforward process that takes under an hour and provides excellent protection against moisture and staining. We apply a professional-grade penetrating sealer to all stone countertops before delivery.

What natural stone is best for bathroom vanities?

Marble is particularly well-suited to bathroom vanities — the acid exposure concern that comes with kitchen use (citrus, vinegar, wine) is largely absent in bathrooms, and marble's luminosity and elegance shine in a vanity setting. Granite is also excellent for vanities and offers better acid resistance. Quartzite works beautifully and provides an upscale aesthetic. Soapstone creates a stunning, unique vanity surface with zero maintenance requirements. All four are available at our Epsom, NH showroom.

Can natural stone be used outdoors?

Yes — granite is an excellent outdoor countertop material for outdoor kitchens, bar tops, and grill surrounds. It handles New Hampshire weather well, including freeze/thaw cycles, when properly selected and installed. Quartzite is also suitable for outdoor use. Marble and soapstone are generally less recommended for outdoor exposure due to weathering concerns. We fabricate outdoor granite countertops regularly for NH homeowners.

How do I clean natural stone countertops?

Daily cleaning: use a pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild dish soap with warm water — avoid vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, bleach, or abrasive scrubbers. Wipe spills promptly. For granite and quartzite, acids won't etch the surface but it's still good practice. For marble, wipe acid spills immediately. Use trivets under very hot pans (good practice for any surface). Reseal annually (except soapstone). With proper care, natural stone countertops maintain their appearance essentially indefinitely.

Do you have natural stone slabs in stock in NH?

Yes — we maintain a large in-stock slab inventory of granite, marble, quartzite, and soapstone at our facility at 1022 Dover Road, Epsom, NH. We strongly recommend visiting in person to select your specific slab — natural stone varies significantly from slab to slab, and seeing the actual stone in person is the only way to fully appreciate what you're getting. Call us at 603-736-0004 to check current availability or to schedule a showroom visit.

How long does natural stone countertop installation take?

The process from signed estimate to installed countertops typically takes 2–3 weeks for most residential projects. This includes templating (measuring your space precisely), fabrication (cutting, edging, and finishing the stone to your exact specs), and installation. The installation itself usually takes one day. We handle the full process in-house — template, fabricate, and install — at our Epsom, NH facility.
