Beyond Indoor Fireplaces
Outdoor Fire Features with Custom Stone Caps
Stone work doesn't stop at the front door. We fabricate custom caps, coping, and surround pieces for outdoor fire pits, fire tables, and open-air fireplaces throughout New Hampshire. The same precision fabrication that goes into your indoor hearth goes into every outdoor piece.
The dark granite cap shown here was precision-cut to fit a custom round fire pit surround. Granite is the ideal outdoor fire feature material — it handles direct flame exposure, UV, and New Hampshire's freeze-thaw seasons without issue.

Which Stone Is Right for Your Fireplace?
Not all stones belong in every part of a fireplace. Here's our honest guide — with links to each material's full page so you can explore colors, finishes, and options.
Granite Surrounds & Hearths
Best for hearthsThe most heat-resistant natural stone — ideal for hearth slabs and surround panels directly adjacent to the firebox. Available in dramatic dark tones and lighter neutrals that complement any living room palette.
Marble Surrounds
Most elegantTimeless, sophisticated, and unmistakably luxurious. White Carrara and Calacatta marble create a classic fireplace aesthetic that photographs beautifully. Best used for surrounds away from direct firebox heat.
Quartzite Surrounds
Best of both worldsThe dramatic veining of marble with better heat tolerance and hardness. Super White, Taj Mahal, and similar quartzites are increasingly popular for NH fireplace projects — they deliver a luxury look with more durability.
Soapstone Hearths
Historic choiceUsed in New England hearths for centuries. Naturally heat-resistant, non-porous, and develops a rich dark patina over time. A bold, distinctive choice for homeowners who want something truly unique.
Common Questions
Fireplace Surround FAQ
What stone is best for a fireplace surround in New Hampshire?
For hearth slabs — the surface directly in front of the firebox — granite is our top recommendation due to its excellent heat resistance. For the surround panels and legs further from the flame, marble and quartzite are both beautiful options. Soapstone is a historic NH hearth material and also fully heat resistant. We'll walk you through the best choice based on your specific fireplace, how it's used, and your design goals during your free consultation.
Can quartz be used for a fireplace surround?
We do not recommend quartz for fireplace applications. Engineered quartz contains resin binders that can discolor or crack under prolonged heat exposure. For fireplace surrounds and hearths, natural stone — granite, marble, quartzite, or soapstone — is always the right choice. Every material in our showroom that we recommend for fireplace use is rated for heat exposure.
What pieces do you fabricate for a fireplace?
We fabricate complete fireplace surround packages — typically including the two side legs (pilasters), a horizontal header piece, and a hearth slab (the floor piece in front of the firebox). We also fabricate mantel shelves, floating ledger shelves, and decorative panel insets. Every piece is cut to the exact dimensions of your fireplace opening based on our templating measurements.
Do you install fireplace surrounds?
We handle the fabrication and precision cutting of all stone pieces. For installation, fireplace surrounds are typically set by a mason or finish carpenter — a different trade than countertop installation. We can coordinate with your contractor or refer you to local tradespeople we've worked with in NH. Our pieces are templated, labeled, and delivered ready to set.
How long does it take to get a fireplace surround fabricated?
After templating, most fireplace surround projects are fabricated and ready for delivery within 5–10 business days. This can vary based on slab availability and project complexity. We'll give you a specific lead time during your consultation once we know the scope of your project.
