Honed, Polished, or Leathered Granite? How to Choose the Right Finish

The finish of your granite completely changes its look, feel, and maintenance needs. Here's how to decide which is right for your NH kitchen.

The Finish Changes Everything

When most people picture granite, they picture a high-gloss, reflective surface. But modern stone fabrication offers three distinct finishes — polished, honed, and leathered — each of which dramatically changes how the same slab looks, feels, and performs in a kitchen.

Choosing your finish is one of the last decisions before fabrication, but it's one of the most important. At Precision Granite Works, we always encourage clients to feel sample pieces of each finish before deciding — because this is a texture decision as much as a visual one.

Polished Finish: Classic and Practical

A polished finish produces the glossy, mirror-like surface that made granite famous. During fabrication, the stone is progressively polished with increasingly fine diamond pads until it achieves maximum reflectivity. The result highlights the stone's natural colors and depth — polished granite often looks more vivid and vibrant than the same material in any other finish.

Maintenance profile: Polished granite is the most stain-resistant option because the tight surface offers minimal porosity. It's easy to clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. The trade-off is that it shows water spots, fingerprints, and smudges clearly — especially on dark stones.

Best for: High-traffic family kitchens, anyone who wants low daily maintenance, kitchens with traditional or transitional design aesthetics.

Honed Finish: Sophisticated and Matte

A honed finish stops the polishing process early — the stone is smooth but completely matte, with no reflectivity. The effect is elegant and understated. Honed granite has been embraced by contemporary designers because it reads as refined without being flashy.

Maintenance profile: Honed stone is more porous than polished stone, which means it requires more frequent sealing — typically twice per year rather than once. It also tends to show oil-based stains more readily, as the open surface absorbs them faster. However, it hides water spots and fingerprints completely.

Best for: Contemporary and transitional kitchens, homeowners who prefer a quiet aesthetic, anyone who finds polished stone too reflective.

Leathered Finish: Texture, Warmth, and Practicality

Leathered stone is produced by running diamond-tipped brushes across a honed surface, creating a subtle, undulating texture that gives the stone a tactile quality you can feel with your fingers. The result retains more of the stone's natural color than honing (it doesn't grey out the way a pure matte finish can) while adding depth and warmth that polished stone doesn't have.

Maintenance profile: Leathered stone is the best of both worlds from a maintenance perspective. The texture hides fingerprints and water spots better than polished stone, while the semi-closed surface is more stain-resistant than fully honed stone. Annual sealing is typically sufficient.

Best for: Farmhouse, transitional, and warm contemporary kitchens; homeowners who want a distinctive surface; anyone who finds both polished and honed options unsatisfying.

See Them in Person Before Deciding

We stock sample pieces of all three finishes in popular granite varieties at our Epsom showroom. We strongly recommend running your hand over each one — the tactile difference between polished and leathered stone is significant, and that physical experience often makes the decision immediately obvious.

Not every granite is available in all three finishes, so we'll work with you to identify materials that offer your preferred finish while meeting your aesthetic goals. Contact us or visit our showroom to explore your options.
