Granite Countertops: From Quarry to Your Kitchen
The journey of granite from a mountain quarry to your NH kitchen countertop is longer and more interesting than most homeowners realize.

Where Granite Comes From
The granite on your kitchen counter started as magma — molten rock deep within the earth that cooled slowly over millions of years, crystallizing into the interlocking mineral structure that makes granite one of the hardest and most durable natural materials on the planet. The specific combination of minerals (primarily quartz, feldspar, and mica, in varying proportions) determines the color, veining, and character of each variety.
Most granite used in North American kitchens is quarried in Brazil, India, and Norway — countries with large granite deposits that have been commercially developed over decades. Some varieties come from quarries in the United States, particularly in New England, where granite has been a regional building material for centuries.
Quarrying: Extracting Stone From the Earth
Modern granite quarrying uses a combination of diamond wire saws and controlled blasting to extract large blocks — typically several tons each — from the quarry face. The blocks are inspected for structural integrity and then rough-cut into slabs using enormous gang saws. A single quarry block yields multiple slabs, and the slabs from a single block will share the same general color family and veining origin, though individual slabs vary meaningfully in pattern.
Processing: From Slab to Finished Surface
After cutting, slabs are processed at polishing facilities. The raw slab surface goes through a series of progressively finer abrasive polishing heads until it reaches the final finish — polished, honed, or leathered. Polished granite achieves its mirror-like reflectivity at this stage. The finished slabs are then bundled in matched sets (so slabs from the same block stay together for buyers who need multiple pieces) and shipped to stone importers and fabricators.
At Our Epsom Showroom
When the slabs arrive at our facility at 1022 Dover Road, Epsom, NH, they're unpacked and inspected. You can see exactly what you're getting — the actual slab, standing upright, in natural light — before any commitment is made. Once you've selected your slab and approved your estimate, we template your kitchen, fabricate your countertops in-house, and install them. The journey from a mountain quarry to your kitchen counter is complete.
